    Description

One of the most important elements of livestock breeding management is the detection of the ovulatory cycle, this is because the effectiveness of female insemination is closely related to the precise timing of insemination.

Studies have shown that the rate of missed detection of the ovulatory cycle in breeding practices is very high. Because estrus usually occurs irregularly in real time and has a short cycle time, it is easy to miss the timing of estrus with few or careless observations.

Therefore, biotechnological methods for detecting estrus in various females have been investigated, one of which is the measurement of the electrical resistance of vaginal mucus during estrus. It was shown that there is also a close relationship between changes in vaginal mucus resistance and hormone levels. An ovulation detector was designed utilizing the above phenomenon.

    Ovulation Detector Procedure

    1
The animal's vulva was opened and a sterilized probe was carefully inserted into the vagina.
    2
Taking care to insert the probe at a 45-degree angle from the bottom up to avoid inserting the probe into the urethra.
    3
Ovulation detector is inserted further until resistance is felt such that the end of the probe with two electrodes is placed at the end of the animal's vagina, at the cervical canal. The probe is then rotated 1 turn to achieve optimal contact of the electrodes with the mucus. (Note: The depth of probe insertion depends on the length of the vagina and may vary from animal to animal, so insertion of the probe should always be followed until resistance is felt.)
    4
Pressing the switch for measurement, press the switch once at an interval of 3 seconds, press three times for three measurements, and press the button again to display the measured value.
    5
After measurement, long press the switch for shutdown or 30 seconds without operation automatically shutdown.

    Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Q How does the ECI-500 Veterinary Ovulation Detector work?
The device operates on biotechnological principles by measuring changes in the electrical resistance of vaginal mucus, which corresponds directly with shifts in animal hormone levels during the ovulatory cycle.
Q What probe sizes are available for different livestock?
The detector supports specialized probing rod lengths tailored to specific animals: 300mm for pigs, 200mm for sheep, 425mm for cows, and 120mm for dogs.
Q What are the typical ovulating reference values?
Ovulation reference values are: Pig at 250(±10), Cow at 210(±10), Sheep at 420(±10), and Dog at ≥200. Values differing from these thresholds indicate non-ovulating periods.
Q How should the probe be inserted to ensure accurate and safe measurement?
Insert the sterilized probe at a 45-degree angle from the bottom upward into the vagina until resistance is felt at the cervical canal, then rotate it 1 full turn to ensure optimal electrode contact with mucus before measuring.
Q How is the measurement recorded and displayed?
Press the switch once every 3 seconds for a total of three readings, then press once more to calculate and display the accurate measured value on the 3.5-inch screen.
Q Does the device have an automatic power-off feature?
Yes, the device can be turned off by long-pressing the power switch, or it will automatically shut down after 30 seconds of inactivity to conserve the 9V battery.
