Dr. Wu Weidong Provides Technical Guidance on the Veterinary Ultrasound Machine Used for Ovum Pick-up (OPU).
In November 2025, the Chief Scientist of Animal Breeding, Dr. Wu Weidong, visited Sichuan Eacenic Group and gave guiding opinions on the research and development of our equipment, especially our newly launched Veterinary Ultrasound machine and negative pressure pump for live egg collection/ovum pick-up. Through the use of these machines combined with in vitro embryo production technology can effectively reduce the animal breeding cycle, making the efficiency of obtaining and nurturing offspring from a top breeding female animal increase dramatically, thus accelerating the transfer of good genes.

What is Ovum Pick-up(OPU)?
Ovum Pick-Up(OPU) is a crucial method to collect oocytes by using a low-invasive method that will not damage the animal. This is the first step of modern breeding techniques, like embryo production and in vitro fertilization. The process is done with a Veterinary Ultrasound Machine to identify ovarian follicles, and then a fine needle puncture is done to extract follicular fluid to separate the oocytes. The accuracy with which this procedure is done, directly influences the efficacy of the entire process of breeding that will follow. Ovum Pick-Up is mainly applied to high-value animals, such as cows and horses.

Operational Procedures for Veterinary Ultrasound Machine and Negative Pressure Pump
R&D engineers demonstrated the operation process in the factory's showroom.
1. The worker applies a veterinary ultrasound machine with an OPU probe and decides the position of the ovarian follicles to see whether their number and size are proper for ovum pick up. Normally, a follicle diameter of 10mm or larger is taken to be optimal for egg collection.

2. The veterinarian inserts the ovum pick-up needle with the help of the ultrasound machine. The needle is inserted through the probe into the vagina, passed through the cervix, and advanced to the vicinity of the ovary. During this process, it is necessary to ensure that the probe is advanced at an appropriate angle to avoid damaging the uterine wall.

3. After determining the position of the follicle, the position of the probe and the ovary was adjusted so that the follicle was located on the puncture guide line. The needle is pushed forward for follicular puncture and the vacuum pump is activated for suction. The needle position is monitored in real time based on the veterinary ultrasound machine images to ensure the number and depth of follicles punctured.

Why is Veterinary Ultrasound Machine Used During Ovum Pick-up?
Veterinary ultrasound machine is the core imaging guidance tool for OPU (Ovum Pick‑Up). Its functions include:
- Precisely locating the ovaries and assessing follicular development.
- Guiding the puncture needle in real time to ensure accurate oocyte retrieval.
- Avoiding injury to the ovaries and surrounding tissues, thereby improving procedural safety
- Recording the number and size of follicles to evaluate the ovulatory function of the donor female.

Recommendations for Veterinary Ultrasound Machine for Ovum Pick-up?
The ECI-X8M veterinary ultrasound machine is designed to meet the high image clarity requirements essential for the highly precise operation of ovum pickup (OPU), thereby ensuring the safety of the animal.
- Equipped with a dedicated OPU probe—an integrated vaginal puncturetypeovum retrieval probe.
- 256 crystal array element probe, clear image, accurate localization of follicles
- 13-inch screen display, providing a clear field of view during operation
- Doppler imaging system

Ovum PickUp (OPU) technology is a vital component of modern livestock breeding. Equipped with veterinary ultrasound machine, it makes the procedure more controllable, precise, and efficient. Sichuan Eacenic Science&Technology Group Co., Ltd. will continue to dedicate itself to advancing modern livestock machine, providing everbetter services for breeders and distributors.
