How to Improve Cow Reproductive Efficiency: A Field Note on the ECI-500 Ovulation Detector

2026-09-11

The ECI-500 Ovulation Detector from ECI Group approaches the problem differently. Instead of watching for behavior, it measures vaginal electrical resistance with a bio-silicone probe. When a cow approaches ovulation, resistance drops. On the ECI-500 Ovulation Detector, a cow reading around 210 (±10) indicates ovulating; a reading above 400 indicates not ovulating. That number is displayed on a 2.0-inch screen within seconds of inserting the 425mm probe for cattle.

What makes the ECI-500 Ovulation Detector practical is that it does not require a vet visit or a lab. A herd manager can walk the pens, test the cows flagged by the tail-paint or the activity system, and get a yes-or-no answer on the spot. The probe is made of bio-silicone, which is easy to clean between animals, and the unit runs on a standard 9V6F22 battery with a working range of 0–50°C and ±1% accuracy. Net weight is 360g, so it hangs on a belt without pulling.

The economics are straightforward. If the ECI-500 Ovulation Detector catches even two extra heats per 100 cows per cycle, the semen and hormone savings alone cover the unit. More importantly, it gives the breeding technician a second data point that does not depend on how long someone stood outside at 5 a.m.

The same ECI-500 Ovulation Detector works across species—pig, sheep, and dog probes are available at 300mm, 200mm, and 120mm respectively, with species-specific reference values. A sheep ovulating reads around 420 (±10); a pig reads around 250 (±10). One device, multiple uses, which matters for mixed operations.

No tool replaces good nutrition or clean AI technique. But the ECI-500 Ovulation Detector closes the information gap that costs farms the most—knowing when to breed. For herds where every open day counts, that is worth more than another round of walking the pens.
